The Living History Association is involved in several Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) programs given in several different locations. Most notable in recent years have been programs on the Battle of Bennington and the Battle of Saratoga run from lodging facilities in the Mount Snow region of Southern Vermont.
Also of tremendous note have been programs operated from the Brandon Inn on Route 7 inn Brandon, Vermont. These programs have centered on the discovery of Lake Champlain by Samuel D. Champlain four hundred years ago in 1609, to programs on the French and Indian Wars, and the American Revolutionary War in the Champlain Valley.
From expertly crafted meals and the quaint setting of one of Vermont’s oldest Inns, the Brandon Inn, Exploritas students venture forth to historic sites such as The Fortress at Crown Point, Fort Ticonderoga, Mount Independence, the Hubbardton Battlefield, and the French and Indian War exhibits at Chimney Point State Historic Site.
The Sail to Steam Program goes from Native American canoes to the steamer Ticonderogadecommissioned in 1954. The program visits ships at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum that include canal sail barges and a full scale reproduction of General Benedict Arnold’s 1776 Gunboat, the Philadelphia.
Lecturers include living historians, under water archeologists, preservationists, and museum professionals, making each trip fun and fact filled.
For additional information and registration for these and other programs, please contact Road Scholar directly or contact our local provider for these programs, Sugar Tours and Educational Journeys.
